Stress And Acne: Stressing A Point

With more and more people giving you lessons on how to take care of acne wherever you go on the internet, some information started to be contradictory and others rejected from the very beginning. Considered myths or just silly, many of them are widely disputed, just like the link between stress and acne.

By the way, what do you think, is there any connection between these two? We believe it is, but we are going to do more than sharing opinions, we will bring facts to sustain our words. And we should begin explaining how things really work with a simple and plain definition of stress.

In a nutshell, stress is nothing but a mechanism that our bodies use to cope with any type of experience, regardless it is a good or a bad one. When we are worried or emotional, anxious or just happy, certain chemicals are released into the blood, giving us more strength and energy. When we do need that energy, it is nothing but a good thing, because otherwise, it will only lead to an imbalance. And stress can be caused by either physical or emotional factors.

Nevertheless, if we were to find another term for how stress manifests inside our bodies, that will definitely be the one of inflammatory response. From here, there are two things that may happen: on one hand our skin pores might simply break, leaving the skin vulnerable or, on the other hand, the adrenal gland will start excessively producing androgens.

So far so good, or at least it looks so, if you are not too familiarized with how skin works and pimple form. We must naturally add that androgens have the power to stimulate the activity of the sebaceous glands and once that this happens you have all the chances to observe that the skin became oilier. The excess of sebum can clog pores but it also makes the dead skin cells to stick one to each other, preventing the natural exfoliation. Since these are some of the main ingredients for acne, it becomes obvious why many specialists claim that stress will give you acne.

The worst part however is that acne itself is a serious stress reason, so this connection is a vicious circle in which both elements cause each other. Reducing stress as much as you can is naturally the key of easing the pain…

And still, there is yet another thing that you need to learn from this particular explanation: hormonal acne caused by stress is most of the time a sign of a damaged immune system, because in normal situations, when your body's natural defense mechanism functions properly, acne should not be triggered under such circumstances.

All these being said we do believe that we managed to stress the way in which stress can be an acne cause. And leaving aside the silly word play, learning either how to manage your emotions or how to boost your immune system is mandatory when trying to leave pimples behind you. You would not want to express chronic stress, in which situation hormones will constantly be released leaving you with no immunity whatsoever.
